Our team helps families explore adapted and inclusive sport, recreation, and physical activity opportunities based on a participant’s interests, support needs, age, location, goals, and previous experiences.
Through our Program Navigation service, we take the time to learn about your child or youth and help identify opportunities that may be a good fit. We can connect you with programs, answer questions, provide information about funding or subsidies, and help you understand what supports or accommodations may be available.
Whether you are exploring options for the first time, looking for a new activity, or trying to find the right next step, we work alongside families to make the process easier and more personalized. Check out Program Navigation to get started.
What is Program Navigation?
Program Navigation is a free support service that helps families find and connect with adapted and inclusive sport, recreation, and physical activity opportunities in Calgary and surrounding areas.
The process begins with a short intake form or conversation to help us learn about your child or youth, including their interests, goals, preferred activities, location, and any supports that may help them participate successfully.
From there, a member of our team will work with you to identify opportunities that fit your family’s needs, connect you with relevant programs and organizations, and develop a personalized action plan. We continue to provide support, resources, and follow-up as questions arise or new opportunities become available.
Whether you are exploring options for the first time or looking for the next step in your recreation journey, we are here to help. Ready to get started? Visit our Program Navigation page.
Do I need a diagnosis to access support?
No. Families do not need a formal diagnosis to connect with the Calgary Adapted Hub, powered by Jumpstart, for support, information, or assistance in exploring adapted and inclusive sport and recreation opportunities.
We recognize that every child or youth’s journey is different, and some families may be waiting for assessments, navigating a new diagnosis, or simply looking for activities that better meet their child or youth’s needs. Our team is happy to help families explore options based on interests, goals, strengths, and support needs, regardless of diagnosis.
Please note that some programs are designed to serve specific disability communities and may have eligibility requirements. If you have questions about a particular program or opportunity, our team is happy to help you understand what options may be available.
What types of programs are available?
Programs vary throughout the year and by organization and may include multisport programs, summer camps, swimming, skating, fitness, wheelchair sports, dance, arts-based programming, outdoor recreation, try-it events, and much more.
Opportunities are available for a wide range of ages, interests, abilities, and experience levels. Whether your child is looking to try a new activity, build confidence and skills, make friends, improve fitness, or pursue a competitive pathway, there may be a program that fits their goals and support needs.
Because opportunities are offered by a network of community organizations across Calgary and surrounding areas, program offerings continue to grow and change throughout the year. Some programs are adapted specifically for participants experiencing disability, while others are inclusive programs designed to bring participants of all abilities together.
Our team is here to help you navigate the options and identify opportunities that align with your family’s interests, location, schedule, and support needs.
Connect with us through Program Navigation or explore the Adapted Recreation Discovery Guide to discover available opportunities.
What if my child is nervous or has had a negative experience before?
That is more common than many families realize. Many children and youth have experienced situations where they felt excluded, overwhelmed, unsuccessful, or unsupported in sport and recreation settings.
Our team takes the time to learn about your child’s interests, strengths, support needs, and past experiences so we can help identify opportunities that may be a good fit. We also work closely with program providers to share strategies, accommodations, and information that can help create a more positive experience.
Participation does not have to start with jumping into a full program. For some families, success may begin with visiting a facility, meeting staff, attending a try-it event, observing a program, or participating with additional support, and we are always happy to support. Our goal is to help children and youth build confidence, experience success, and find opportunities where they feel welcomed, valued, and like they belong.
Are programs inclusive or adapted?
Some programs are fully adapted, meaning they are specifically designed for participants experiencing disability and may include specialized equipment, modified activities, smaller group sizes, or additional support staff.
Other programs are inclusive community programs where participants of all abilities take part together. These programs may offer accommodations such as visual schedules, sensory supports, adapted equipment, extra volunteer support, flexible instruction, or modifications to activities to help everyone participate successfully.
For example, an adapted wheelchair basketball program is designed specifically for participants who use a wheelchair, while an inclusive summer camp may welcome participants of all abilities and provide individualized support to ensure everyone can participate alongside their peers.
If you’re unsure which option is the best fit, our Program Navigation can help you explore opportunities that align with your child or youth’s interests, goals, and support needs.
Can my child participate with peers without disabilities?
Yes. Many programs focus on inclusive participation and belonging, bringing children and youth of all abilities together in shared activities and environments. These programs are designed to provide meaningful opportunities for everyone to participate, build friendships, develop skills, and feel a sense of belonging, regardless of ability, experience, or support needs.
Are financial supports available?
We understand that the cost of sport and recreation can be a significant barrier for many families, and while the Calgary Adapted Hub powered by Jumpstart does not provide direct financial assistance, individuals or families are encouraged to explore:
Additional supports:
What if my child needs extra support in a program?
Every program is different, but many organizations work closely with families to understand a participant’s strengths, support needs, and goals before a program begins. Depending on the program, accommodations may include adapted equipment, visual supports, flexible instruction, smaller group sizes, additional volunteers, sensory considerations, or other strategies that help participants engage successfully.
Through our Program Navigation service, we can also help families identify programs that align with their child’s support needs and discuss what accommodations may be available. In some cases, families may choose to provide their own support person to assist with participation.
We also work with community partners that offer recreation respite and support services for a fee. If your child requires additional support to participate safely and meaningfully, please contact us, and we would be happy to connect you with available options.

What does inclusion mean at Calgary Adapted Hub powered by Jumpstart?
At the Calgary Adapted Hub powered by Jumpstart, inclusion means creating opportunities where everyone feels welcomed, valued, respected, supported, and able to participate in meaningful ways. We recognize that every individual brings unique strengths, experiences, identities, and support needs, and that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for everyone.
Inclusion goes beyond simply being present in a program or activity. It involves creating environments where participants can contribute, build relationships, experience success, develop confidence, and feel a genuine sense of belonging. We work alongside families, organizations, and community partners to reduce barriers and create opportunities where all children and youth can thrive.
What is the difference between adapted and inclusive recreation?
Adapted recreation is intentionally modified to meet the needs of an individual or group of participants. Adaptations may include specialized equipment, modified rules, additional supports, environmental changes, or alternative teaching approaches that help participants engage successfully.
Inclusive recreation focuses on creating shared opportunities where people of all abilities participate together. Inclusive programs may also include adaptations and accommodations, but the goal is to create environments where everyone can learn, play, and participate alongside one another.
For example, an adapted wheelchair basketball program is specifically designed for participants who use wheelchairs, while an inclusive recreation program may bring together participants with and without disabilities while providing supports that allow everyone to participate meaningfully.
Both adapted and inclusive opportunities play an important role in creating a strong and accessible recreation system, and families often choose different options depending on their goals, interests, and support needs.
How does Calgary Adapted Hub powered by Jumpstart support belonging?
Belonging is at the heart of everything we do. We work with families, organizations, recreation providers, educators, coaches, volunteers, and community leaders to create environments where individuals feel welcomed, connected, represented, and valued for who they are.
We support belonging by helping organizations build inclusive practices, providing training and resources, connecting families with appropriate opportunities, and encouraging participant-centred approaches that recognize individual strengths and experiences.
Our goal is to help ensure that children and youth are not simply participating in activities, but are building friendships, developing confidence, contributing to their communities, and feeling like they truly belong.
Are programs physically accessible?
Accessibility varies by location, facility, and organization. While many recreation providers have made significant investments in accessibility, every program and facility may offer different features, accommodations, and supports.
The Calgary Adapted Hub powered by Jumpstart works closely with partners to identify and reduce barriers wherever possible. This may include supporting facility accessibility improvements, providing staff training, sharing resources, exploring program adaptations, and helping families identify opportunities that align with their needs.
If accessibility is an important consideration for your family, we encourage you to contact us or the program provider or us directly so we can help you gather information and identify the best options available
